United Edge Ahead in Kone Race as Roma Star Signals Openness to Old Trafford Move

Manchester United appear to have stolen a march on their rivals in the race to land AS Roma's Manu Kone, according to fresh reports emerging from France this week.

The Red Devils have already bolstered their midfield ranks considerably, bringing in Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos earlier in the window. Yet Erik ten Hag's side are keen to add a third option to complete their rebuild of that department—specifically a more defensively-minded presence to succeed Casemiro.

Kone, who shone for France at the World Cup, has emerged as a leading candidate for that role. Arsenal and Chelsea have also circled the 23-year-old, but L'Equipe's latest dispatch suggests United have moved quickest out of the blocks. The French outlet reports that the club from Manchester are treating Kone as a priority target and have already held preliminary discussions with the player's representatives. Crucially, Kone is understood to be receptive to the prospect of joining United.

Two significant obstacles remain, however. Roma are expected to demand a hefty fee for their midfielder, though the Italian club may be persuaded to negotiate if the right offer arrives. Beyond that, two unnamed Premier League sides have also registered their interest.

The Athletic's Laurie Whitwell has raised concerns about whether United will be willing to meet Roma's asking price. While acknowledging that Kone is unlikely to command a £100m transfer fee, Whitwell suggested the Serie A club's valuation might still stretch beyond what the Old Trafford hierarchy are prepared to spend.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has provided further context, confirming United's keen eye for Kone whilst emphasising he remains one option among several under consideration. Romano noted that contact has been made with Kone's representatives, though no formal bid to Roma has yet materialised.

Romano highlighted United's satisfaction with their existing summer acquisitions, noting the combined £85m spent on Santos and Tielemans represented excellent value. The focus now, he explained, is identifying the right defensive midfielder—someone physical and capable of breaking the lines—before making their move.

United are taking their time to assess the market, keen to avoid the pitfalls of overpaying in what has been a disrupted transfer window.
